Sometimes we have to take risks to see magic happen. I wouldn't consider myself a natural risk taker, but sometimes in my job I have to force myself to jump out on a limb to advance my creativity. Weeks ago, I was asked by a former client I met out in Dallas who lives in San Antonio to photograph her second daughter Abbie's senior pictures. I had photographed her first daughter Emma when they were visiting their cousins out in Dallas a little over a year ago, and she remembered me saying I would be moving out to Del Rio, which is about two and a half hours outside of San Antonio. In contemplating the trip, there were several factors involved...like planning where to stay, or what we would do if the weather was bad when I got out there...not to mention I had never gotten the opportunity to meet Abbie in the past, and I wouldn't be able to scout out the locations ahead of time. Nonetheless, I saw it as a new opportunity to create and possibly learn something new, so I took the risk, and I'm so glad I did!
Meeting Abbie for the first time, I felt like I was looking in a mirror. Her big blue eyes, fiery red hair, and creative, introspective personality reminded me so much of myself! It's crazy though, even when you are with someone that seems so much like you, it still takes some warming up to get into a good rhythm where you feel comfortable around one another. The moment in which she picked up her violin to start playing for me, as if it were an extension of herself...that's when the magic happened.
